Hi Julie, I agree visuwords is a great tool that requires limited technical skills. Lots of good uses. On another note I think we are still inclined to store things close to home either on our own netbooks/notebooks or school servers etc. I think we…

Hi Everyone, The tool that I learned about while shadowing was a website called VisuWords (www.visuwords.com). This site is an online visual dictionary which allows you to type in a words and it gives you, not only meanings, but also gives you assoc…

Hi Sarah, its great to hear that you had the opportunity to find an ICT tool that can be used across different KLA's and different year levels. As you have said "it wasn't overly high tech". Thats a great point, as many of the capabilities that can…

Hi Maxine, glad you found the experience a positive one and saw things you could use in any classroom. Keep using the netbook ning as a port of reference as there are often good things found in here and the discussion between teachers is terrific. T…

It was great watching Joe using the smart board and speaker setup to lead the students in a song analysis. They all had their laptops and were using the 'comment' function in Word to make notes on what they thought the lyrics meant. My first thought…

Hi Di, I shadowed a Year 6 class at Swan Hill Central Primary School during their "Numeracy" with another teacher from Swan Hill College. I found the experience valuable from many aspects and saw the use of the netbooks for one part of their session…

dont you just love that it is assumed we can "fix" the technical problems ie server, printers etc. Will have to have a go at using etherpad sounds good. If we end up meeting on the 11th - show us. Kids are not what makes the technology evil - it's t…

Hi Di,
I'll be there tonight but will be a little late as I have a Curriculum meeting first in the Library. Just did some shadowing at Central to look at the Netbooks in operation in Claire's Yr 6 class. Students were using Google sketchup to draw a 3D plan for a house and land design for one of their teachers who is building a new house. I was surprised to hear that the trial was not continuing for the 3 years as planned and am glad I left the textbook on the booklist for the Yr 7's next year. Some issues raised were ones that I'm sure we will have, like other kids knowing passwords, emailing inappropriately, technical problems, but when there is a good use to which the computers can be put they will be available. Unfortunately I can see a bigger problem here with looking after property as the other students will cause problems in the locker areas so we'll need to decide on a plan that keeps them out of reach I think. Some Maths sites will give help with tutorials etc and will provide a variety of practice avenues and projects like a house building assignment or having a given amount of money to budget with, graphing in excel, will all be things we can do. It was also just good to go to a primary school and watch classes in operation.
